The Integration of English History Play into Tragedy

Doctor Elias Khalaf

Abstract:

This study aims at considering the decline of the English history (or chronicle) play as an integration into Tragedy, and proceeds to emphasize that this integration initially took the form of individuated tragedies because they were concerned with the characters' agonies and quests for self-assertion. This study begins by presenting the most notable definitions of the English history play as a didactic dramatic genre which flourished in the sixteenth century during the Spanish threat to invade Britain. It also concentrates on George Peel's Edward I which first opens as a didactic chronicle play, then turns into a poignant tragedy that dramatizes its characters' individual suffering.
