A study of the Kinetics of diethylene glycol reaction with maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride

Doctor Muwafak Tellawi

Abstract:

The Kinetics of reaction between both Maleic Anhydride and Phthalic Anhydride with Diethylene glycol in the moelten phase have been studied at 150 ،165 ،180  and 195 OC respectively.

The acid value of the product of reaction has been determined . The polyesterfication reaction has been found to be of second order with an activation energy of 40.5 kj/mol for conversions of up to 62.2 , 63.4 , 66.8  and 71.7 % at 150 , 165 ,180  and 195 0C  respectively. Above these conversions, the reaction becomes of the third order with an activation energy of 83.3KJ/mol  .

The degree of polymerization, the number average molecular weight and weight average molecular weight have also been determined, and they have been found out to be linearly related to time for conversions of ub to 62.2 , 63.4 , 66.8  and 71.7 % at 150 ,165 , 180  and 195 OC respectively.
