Abstract:
The low cost, ease of deployment has exposed WSNs an attractive choice for numerous applications.
But in fact these networks are operated on battery that are difficult to recharged or replaced, and this is what made the energy conservation one of the critical issues that must be taken into account when designing these networks. In this paper, we propose a new hierarchical routing protocol called VC-LEACH to reduce energy consumption and prolong the lifetime of WSNs that deployed randomly. This protocol divides the observed field into virtual clusters (VCs) to ensure distribution of the heads on the whole area. It depends on the concept of the maximum residual energy to select the heads.
The simulation results showed that the VC-LEACH protocol reduces the number of dead nodes dramatically compared with LEACH and save a lot of energy, which prolongs the lifetime of the network, and enhances its performance.
