Esterication of Acetic Acid with Ethanol Catalysed by an Acidic Ion-Exchange Resin

Doctor Muwafak Tellawi

Abstract:

The esterification reactions of acetic acid with ethyl alcohol catalysed by an acidic ion-exchange resin (Polystyrene-de vinyl benzene sulphonic acid(.

The ethyl acetate ester preparation was carried out in a batch reactor.

The effects of the mass ratio of catalyst to acetic acid (1-10) %, the molar ratio of acetic acid to ethyl alcohol (1:1-1:2-2:1-4:1) , and the reaction temperature ) 323-333-338-343-353 K)  K , were studied for the conversion of acetic acid to optimize the reaction conditions .

The optimal conditions for esterification were an)  acetic acid : ethanol( molar ratio of 1:2 , (P-styrene- DVB( amount (5.4 % wt/wt), and 535K  temperature, whereas the maximum yield of ethyl esters reached (75% wt/wt).
