The Arab University for Science and Technology organized a symposium entitled "Architecture in Homs" in cooperation with the Historical Society in Homs, in the presence of Professor Dr. Adnan Younis, President of the University, and Dr. Mustafa Al-Masry, Vice President of the University.
Engineer Hanadi Tayara, holder of a master's degree in architectural design, gave a valuable lecture in which she discussed the factors affecting architecture in the city of Homs. The lecture reviewed the social, cultural and religious influences, in addition to the climatic, economic and aesthetic factors.
The lecture, which was held at the association's headquarters, began with a historical overview of the architectural heritage in Homs, referring to the historical stages that architecture went through, starting from the classical period, passing through the ancient Arabs before Christ, then the Sassanids, and reaching the Islamic conquest.

She also presented prominent examples of the architectural heritage in Homs, such as the Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers, and the Church of Umm al-Zinnar. The Great Mosque of al-Nuri, the Church of Mar Elian, the Mosque of Khalid bin al-Walid, and the Palace of al-Zahrawi.
At the end of the lecture, Engineer Tayara presented examples of how heritage elements were used in modern buildings in Homs, such as al-A’rab Street and the “Beity” restaurant. She stressed that the cultural diversity and architectural heritage of the city can contribute to rebuilding an urban renaissance in Homs if it is optimally invested.
A cooperation agreement was also concluded between the Syrian Historical Society and the Arab University for Science and Technology to enhance efforts towards preserving the architectural heritage in the city.
Finally, thanks and appreciation were extended to Dr. Safouh Al-Sabai, who coordinated the lecture between the university and the society, in view of his efforts in making this event a success.
