There were different views about enamel and dentine role in whole tooth color after bleaching. The aim of this study was to evaluate the separate role of enamel (E) and dentine (D) in the whole color change of tooth which subjected to 40% hydrogen peroxide (hP) gel & to evaluate enamel translucency change.
methods:
150 dental samples were involved in this study (were taken from 30 upper third molars, every molar was sectioned into 5 pieces( CE control enamel ,BE bleached enamel ,CD control dentin ,BD bleached dentin ,and ED enamel dentin; (total = 30 × 5 pieces ). the ΔE( value of color change) of whole tooth color ,enamel color and dentine color separately were calculated by the following equation : ∆E= [(∆L*)2 + (∆a*)2 + (∆b*)2]1/2 after measuring a*,b*,l* using VITA compact apparatus . Every molar crown was sectioned into three pieces, one: gives the whole color of tooth , second: gives control enamel & dentin color, the third piece gives bleached enamel & dentine color. Bleached pieces were submitted to bleaching by hydrogen peroxide 40% for 45 minutes without light activation. To study enamel translucency change after bleaching, we used black and white bases to measure pieces translucency using following equations:

no statistically significant differences between whole tooth color change and each of enamel and dentin color change separatelly (P <0.05) . enamel translucency increased after bleaching.
tooth color change returns to enamel color change and dentin color change . and the enamel translucency increases after tooth bleaching.
