The main objective of this research is to explore the possibilities of low-cost automated photogrammetric systems to obtain data for GIS databases and Building Information Modelling (BIM). In fact, the products of these systems, such as orthophotos and digital elevation models, are useful for GIS staff at the architectural level (large scales). Regarding to the 3D point cloud resulted from these systems, they are useful for engineering project managers because they are a very important input to the development of BIM. In this case, the automated photogrammetry could be an alternative to high-cost 3D laser scanners because of their low cost and ability to represent elements geometry in detail.
In this research, a methodology was discussed to obtain a precise 3D metric model as a basis for obtaining architectural data in architectural GIS, and as an input for BIM software, starting from camera selection, taking appropriate images, preparing reference data, processing and obtaining results. This methodology was applied to the building of the bookstore at Tishreen University.
