The load of mobile networks is changing during the day, due to the user mobility and the variation of network usage. therefore the traditional Distributed Radio Access Network (D-RAN) , where the BaseBand processing Units (BBUs) are assigned statically to a number of cells, is sub optimal, comparing to the cloud based architecture called Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). In C-RAN a group of cells shares processing resources (share the same BBU), and hence benefit (more power and cost saving) from statistical multiplexing gain is expected.
Traditional RAN can evolve to C-RAN by three phases:
Base Band Unit or (Digital Unit DU) centralization, DU pooling and Virtual RAN.
In this paper, the energy and cost savings in C-RAN are evaluated using OPNET Modeler. The scenario is built upon the statistics and recommendations on traffic models from Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) and Juniper research.
