In n this study, the quality of diclofenac sodium modified-release tablets was evaluated by testing its physiochemical properties by conducting several tests, which represent an important factor of quality. Samples were collected from Syrian pharmacies, where they were coded A, B, C, D for each of the local pharmaceutical companies and X, S, E for the samples of the original international preparation.
This work showed that the studied tablets have quality specifications regarding their mechanical resistance and content of the active substance, and there is an acceptable homogeneity in their weights. On the other hand, results showed a rapid disintegration of some local enteric-coated tablets and a difference in their release profile from the brand, as well as a difference in the release of most of the locally marketed extended-release tablets. This affects the quality of these tablets and thus may affect the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of the preparation.
