Aims of the study:
Modern Maxillofacial surgery possesses many methods of treating mandibular fractures. There exist, however, differences of opinion as to their use and clinical usefulness
This justifies the undertaking of our study whose aim is:
- To evaluate the results of treatment of 656 patients with mandibular fractures.
- To evaluate clinical material and its statistical analysis to decide on the choice of such a method of treatment which is the most effective in mandibular fractures?
Conclusion:
- Fractures of the mandible occur most commonly in young persons in the (21-30) age groups.
- Amongst the cause of mandibular fracture in the first place are assaults and only further down the list traffic accidents and accidents at work.
- The mandible most commonly fractures because of trauma in the regions of canine and premolars, angle and molars.
- Amongst the three treatment methods evaluated, the most useful and most effective in treatment of mandibular fractures are surgical methods.
- From the clinical and statistical analysis, it can be seen that the most effective method of treating mandibular fractures and the one that has the least number of complications is osteosynthesis using miniplates.
- The use of intermaxillary fixation improves the result of surgical treatment (plates, miniplates).
- The cause of injury does not have an influence on the results of treatment.
- The type of fracture and its site have only a relative effect on the results of treatment
- The period elapsing from the time of injury to the commencement of specialist treatment has a statistically significant influence on the result of treatment. The later the treatment is started the more likely are complications to occur.
- If a tooth is left in the line of fracture, then, irrespective of the treatment methods used the number of complications increases.
