Preparation of activated carbon from sewage sludge is a promising way to produce a useful adsorbent for pollutants removal as well as to dispose of sewage sludge.
This research seeks to study chemical activation process on sewage sludge producing from waste water treatment plant in Hims – Syria as it is a carbon rich substance.
A series of carbonaceous sorbents were prepared by chemical activation with sulfuric acid and zinc chloride of concentrations [1,3,5]mol/l and at pyrolysis temperatures [300, 450, 600]°C and dwell times [30, 60, 90]min. The sorbents produced were characterized, and their properties (surface area, micropores'volume, pH and Iodine number) were found as a function of the experimental parameters.
The results showed that the sorbents obtained from sewage sludge which activated by 1 mol/l ZnCl2 at temperature of 300°C and dwell time of 60min had the highest surface area of 321m^2 /g.
